Cuproptosis

Copper is a trace element that is maintained at low levels in mammals, acting as a cofactor for key enzymes within cells, and is involved in important physiological processes such as energy conversion, peptidylglycation, cellular oxidative metabolism, and angiogenesis. Recent studies have revealed that high concentrations of copper (Cu􏚳+) may trigger a new type of cell death—"cuproptosis." This death mechanism is distinct from traditional apoptosis and necrosis, characterized by copper ion accumulation and protein toxicity stress, manifesting as a copper-dependent cell death mechanism.
