Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a cellular process in which cells lose epithelial characteristics and acquire mesenchymal characteristics. This involves the loss of cell polarity, the disassembly of cell-cell adhesion, and the remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton, which enhances the migration and invasion capabilities of cancer cells. EMT plays a key role in early embryonic development, promoting the formation of mesoderm and the peripheral nervous system. Molecularly, this process is characterized by the downregulation of epithelial markers (such as E-cadherin, α-catenin, β-catenin, γ-catenin, CK, and ZO-) and the upregulation of mesenchymal markers (such as N-cadherin, Vimentin, α-SMA, and Fibronectin).
