Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are key mediators of intercellular communication and have garnered significant attention in tumor immunology research. In the construction of the immune suppression
network within the tumor microenvironment (TME), tumor cells secrete EVs to transfer bioactive substances to neighboring and distant sites, thereby coordinating multiple key events that promote tumor cell proliferation and inhibit immune cells. EVs are submicron-sized, membrane-enclosed particles released by all cell types into body fluids or tissue culture media and are mainly categorized into three types: apoptotic bodies, microvesicles, and exosomes. EVs carry biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, which they can deliver to recipient cells that take them up. Moreover, EVs have several advantages, including a lipid bilayer that protects their contents from degradation in the bloodstream, the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and the potential for bioengineering modifications to increase the loading capacity of therapeutic cargo. Therefore, they have been successfully used in many studies to deliver various therapeutic proteins.
